Woman Under Socialism by August Bebel was read by millions of working class people before World War I. It paints an extensive vision of woman's emancipation under Socialism. What is of the most significance is his description of the self- fulfilling nature of work in a socialist society for both men and women. It shows why Marxism and feminism are mutually antagonistic in that feminists see the basic division in society as between men and women and Marxists see that the basic division in society as between the capitalist class and the working class. Thus for Bebel and socialists men and women must work and fight together to end their oppression.
